Large parts of inner Manchester were laid out as terraced streets between the 1880s and the First World War, and rows of that age still line Levenshulme, Longsight, Rusholme and Moss Side. Roofs from that period are typically slate, with brick chimney stacks and lead flashing that have stood up to more than a hundred years of Manchester rain.
To the south, Chorlton, Didsbury and Withington have larger Victorian and Edwardian houses alongside streets of inter-war semis, Burnage is mostly inter-war housing, and the city centre, Ancoats and Hulme are a mix of converted mills and warehouses, apartment blocks and newer homes. Tiled roofs with mortar-bedded ridges, flat roofs on extensions and blocks, and uPVC roofline are all part of the mix. We work on all of them.
We are based at 16a Nicholas Street in Manchester city centre, so Ancoats, Hulme, Ardwick, Longsight, Rusholme and Cheetham Hill are all a short drive.

Manchester's housing runs from long rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces to large period villas, inter-war semis, converted mills and modern apartment blocks, and each kind of building has its own typical roof faults. These are the jobs our roofers are called out to most across Longsight, Levenshulme, Rusholme, Fallowfield, Chorlton and Didsbury.
The terraced streets of Levenshulme, Longsight, Rusholme and Moss Side mostly went up between the 1880s and the First World War, and were roofed in slate when they were built. The slates usually outlast the nails holding them: once the nails corrode, slates slip out of line or come down in a gale. Most can be re-fixed or swapped for matching slates without stripping the whole roof. See our slate roofing.
Period houses across Manchester, from two-up two-down terraces to the big villas of Whalley Range and Didsbury, still carry tall brick chimney stacks, many of them no longer used. As the most exposed part of the roof, their pointing erodes and the lead flashing where the stack meets the slates splits or works loose. A damp patch on the chimney breast or a nearby ceiling is usually the first sign. See our chimney repairs and lead flashing repairs.
The inter-war semis of Burnage, Withington and Fallowfield have tiled roofs whose ridge tiles and edges were bedded in sand and cement mortar. After decades of frost and rain that mortar cracks and falls away, ridge tiles work loose and the verge opens up to wind and driven rain. See our ridge tile repairs and dry verge systems.
Front bays are a feature of Manchester's terraces and semis from Chorlton to Levenshulme, each with a small roof of its own in lead, felt or tile. When that covering splits, or the joint against the house wall opens up, a stain appears on the ceiling or wall just above the window. See our bay window roof repairs.
Rear extensions, loft dormers and garages across Fallowfield, Withington and Chorlton often have felt flat roofs that are long past their best: blistered, split or ponding after rain. A sound roof with a single fault can be patched; one that is failing across the surface is better re-covered. See our flat roofing.
Moss off the roof and leaves from street and garden trees fill gutters fast, and on a terrace one blocked run can overflow onto the neighbouring house too. Once gutters spill over, water soaks the fascia boards behind them, the timber softens and the brackets start to pull away. See our gutter repairs and gutter cleaning.
